Do You Do This Too?

Feeling your best starts on the inside and works its way out. We all know this, right? But how many of us truly spend the time working on the inside? I can tell you from experience not many do. Sometimes, I even find myself heading towards that black hole – the place where the little voice inside your head starts taking over, filling your mind with negative, unhelpful thoughts. When this happens to me it affects my entire attitude. I get tired and feel unmotivated. I don’t want to do the things that I know will actually make me feel better. As a result, I find myself not feeling or looking my best. I start to feel, dare I say it, MEDICOCRE. Since one of my values is to strive for excellence in all that I do, being MEDOOCRE is an awful feeling for me. Do you do this too? Maybe a little? I know we all have our bad days and that’s totally fine. It’s hard to be outstanding everyday. So when I am having one of these days, especially when I have to be “on,” here’s what I do to get myself back on track:

  1. I make it a priority to fit in an exercise session. Even if it’s only a mile run or a 20-minute cardio video, I make time to do it. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t feel better after a workout.

  2. I increase my water intake. I find when I don’t drink enough water it contributes to my fatigue.

  3. I steer clear of sugar. By around 3 or 4 o’clock, I used to always reach for something sugary, hoping it would give me that much needed boost only to feel worse after eating it. Plus, the unnecessary calories just aren’t worth it. Now, I reach for something healthly like fruit or peanut butter on a rice cake.

  4. I read or listen to content that gets me motivated to do my best. I love listening to Darren Hardy. Check out

  5. I pick out 3 or 4 outfits from my closet that make me feel awesome and wear them that week. I’ll also purge one or two items that just don’t inspire me anymore.   6. I think about key accomplishments and the skills I used to achieve them like my tenacity or relationship building acumen. I have created an exercise to walk you through this process. Check it out here.

  7. I schedule a fun activity.

  8. I review my goals and track my progress.

  9. I reach out to a colleague or friend to get a fresh perspective.

  10. I take a mini break and step outside for a few minutes on a sunny day or pop on Pinterest for some outfit inspiration.
