5 Ways to Stand Out from your Peers

Want to make an impact at you next networking event, industry conference or meeting? Then avoid wearing a dark or muted color palette head to toe. By wearing a pop of color you won’t get lost in the sea of people attending the event. I witnessed this first hand over the weekend when I happened to walk through a hotel that was hosting a large business event for high school students. It was a mass of black, grey, navy blue, brown and dark green. I even mentioned to my friend that I saw absolutely no color until a student walked by with a salmon colored dress topped with a dark blazer. Understandably, the students wanted to look business appropriate. However, the lack of color made all the students blend together. I remember only a few who stood out to me and they were the students wearing color. I noticed and remembered them. I know many of us experience this same dilemma especially when we are unsure of the dress code, we tend to play it safe. The problem with always playing it safe is you run the risk of blending in instead of being remembered. If you want to stand out from the crowd while looking and feeling your best, then take a look at my tips below. And if you feel you need a little help, give me a ring (617-645-4414) or pop me an email. I am more than happy to talk to you about how I can help you identify your authentic style and truly shine! Please feel free to comment below. I love hearing from you!

  1. Wear color! Chose a color that complements your natural coloring, is appropriate for the event, and makes you feel your best. If your eyes are blue, wear a dress in a gorgeous shade of blue or plum. Or a blue dress shirt with a tie that has shades of plum, purple or fuchsia.

  2. Select an outfit that is you! If a conservative suit isn’t your style, then don’t wear it. Instead, try separates. Invest in a blazer with an interesting pattern, fabric or cut that can be paired with pants, a skirt or dress. You could even wear it with jeans on a dress down day at the office or out with friends. This goes for the guys too. A stylish blazer or sport coat paired with a casual pant or even paired with jeans looks polished. With a piece like this in your wardrobe you’ll always looked fabulous.

  3. Your hair matters! It is one of the first things people notice when they meet you. Find a hair stylist that understands your style and ask them to help identify a look that works for you. Recently, I tried a new look and received rave reviews. I understand it can be scary to make a change but sometimes it’s the best way to enhance or even update your appearance. Remember, a hairstyle isn’t permanent.

  4. Buy clothes that fit your body shape and tailor them! I know I say this A LOT, but it makes a huge difference in the way you look. I can’t tell you how many people I see with pants dragging on the ground, sleeves that cover half their hands and suits jackets that are WAY too big. It is sloppy and it screams that you don’t care. Even Mark Zuckerberg wears quality tees and jeans that fit him well.

  5. Focus on body language. Smile, give a firm handshake, stand up straight and walk with purpose.
