7 Tips to Whip Your Closet into Shape
One of the things I love to do is organize closets! Clearing out a closet, cleaning and re-organizing it so that it is easy to maneuver and helps a client get dressed in a snap is one of the best feelings I get from my work.
I had the privilege of working with a wonderful male client this month, helping him to purge his closet of many items that either didn’t fit him anymore, were old or just plain not “him” anymore. We had so much fun doing it, and he felt absolutely amazing when he saw the end result. Almost every time I work with a client, I tweak something in my own closet. To me, my wardrobe is a work in progress. We evolve every day, week, month and year and our clothing should evolve with us. My style five years ago is different than my style now. My life has changed quite a bit during that time period, so it just makes sense that my wardrobe would change too.
Don’t get me wrong, I still have beautiful shoes, boots, bags and coats that are over five years old, but I have updated the majority of my wardrobe since then. My business, clients and the events I attend or participate in have changed, and I want my current image to reflect where I am today, not where I was five years ago. I find that by reviewing my closet often, I am able to keep up with this evolution. As soon as I find myself not wearing a piece of clothing anymore, I ask myself why, and then I remove it from my closet. Sometimes, I’ll take it to my studio and keep it there for a while until I am sure I am ready to let it go, and other times, I just let it go and donate it immediately. The process is different for all of us.
I love when I get a call from a client who is ready and motivated to make this shift. It is such an exciting process to go through with them. I see the weight lift from their bodies when they finally decide to let go of certain clothes. I get to see their faces light up when they put something on that makes them feel amazing, or I share a new outfit combination that they never tried. Having a closet filled with clothes you love makes you feel fabulous and reduces the stress of getting ready for work, an important event, a business meeting or even a date. It also takes the stress out of packing. So what are you waiting for? Get organized! Below, I’ve listed some tips and products that will help you get there once you decide it is time to tackle YOUR closet.
Display everything you can: shoes, bags, scarves, belts and accessories. If it is out of sight it is out of mind and you won’t wear it.
Organize your clothes by style then by color. Divide these categories with dividers, which you can find here.
Use shoe hangers to get your shoes off the floor, which you can find here.
Use cotton garment bags to store your special dresses or outfits, like these here. Cotton breathes and preserves your clothes better than plastic.
