Interviewing is inevitable if you want to land a job. I have found the best way to get over my fear of interviewing is by practicing. By practicing, I feel more confident and prepared. Here are some of my tips on how you can combat the interview jitters and wow your interviewer:
Do the Research
Once you have your interview scheduled do the necessary background research on the company. Your interviewer will ask you questions to determine what know about the company and why your are interested in working for them. Your ability to communicate your knowledge about the organization and your reasons for wanting to work there shows that you are serious about this opportunity and have done your homework.
Select an outfit that makes you feel confident and is appropriate for the type of interview
The company culture and environment will dictate the type of outfit you wear. If your interview is at a start up, you may want to wear a pair of pants and a top or sweater instead of a suit as this environment is super casual. Conversely, if you are interviewing at an accounting firm a dark suit with a coordinating blouse is more appropriate. Make sure your outfit suits YOUR style and makes you feel confident. Skip the super high heels and perfume. Save them for your social life.
Know your resume inside and out
Your interviewer has done research on you, so you should be prepared for any question. Make sure your resume is up-to-date and bring a copy with you. Be prepared to discuss how your experience relates to the job you are interviewing for and have examples of your results and why you are the best candidate for the job.
Be able to share your weaknesses in the best light
One of the most popular interview questions that people tend to worry about is “What are your weaknesses?” The best way to answer this question is to find something that you truly feel you need to work on, and once you share that part of your answer, follow up with how you plan to work this weakness. If you are unsure of a weakness to share, ask a colleague, professor or employer you trust what they think you can improve.
Be true to who you are
Your resume got you in the door, so they already think you have the qualifications for the job. The point of an interview is for the interviewer to get to know you as a person, and determine if you are a proper fit for the company. It is your job to shine. Figure out what makes you unique and share it during the interview. Doing this will set you apart from your competition and make your memorable.
Now get out there and practice and make the most out of every interview opportunity! You may not always land the job but your confidence will grow and you will improve your communication skills.
