Most of us give very little thought to our clothing style and what it may say about us. Have you ever looked at someone and said to yourself, “Wow, that person must be having a bad day,” based on how they looked? Our clothes are a reflection of what is going on in the inside whether we care to believe it or not. The styles we choose, our hairstyle, the colors, patterns, shoes, and even accessories tell a story about what’s going on in our lives, or what we want to be going on.
As you get dressed for work each day, give it some thought so you can reflect your best self every day. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Select outfits based on what you have on your schedule that day, not by how you feel.
Bright colors communicate energy, confidence and excitement. However, too much color can also be overpowering and intimidating.
Classic styles and strong lines communicate confidence and power.
Bold patterns and edgier styles say, “I am a risk taker.”
Quality fabrics, shoes and accessories say, “I value myself. I am worth the investment.”
Outfits that are too big for your body say, “I am uncomfortable with myself, I’m hiding, and I lack self-esteem.”
Clothes that are out of date say, “I am out of touch.” (You may not be, but that’s what you’re communicating.) An updated look says, “I am relevant.”
Wrinkled or stained clothing says, “I am lazy and don’t care.”
Untailored clothing, and scuffed shoes say, “I don’t pay attention to detail” or “I am lazy and don’t care.”
A well put together outfit (whether it is business casual or business formal) says, “I value and care about myself, I respect others, and I am confident, capable and ready for business.”
